As I’ve been using Twitter more frequently, I’ve begun to use it for a variety of reasons. Not only do I use it to keep up with my friends, I use it to Follow news sources such as Fox News, CNN, and the New York Times, celebrities such as the Kardashians and Lady Gaga, and some other entertaining accounts such as Totalsratmove and UWGirlProblems. Twitter has come to serve many functions for me based on who I Follow. It has become my quick and easy news source, a way to keep up with Hollywood celebrities, and has become an addicting distraction.
News Source. News sources, such as Fox News and CNN, post short clips of recent news that may be found on their website or television show. They often place the link to the full news story in their Tweet so that you are able to get all of the details and find similar stories. I have found this extremely beneficial for my busy lifestyle. Myself, and I’m sure many others, do not have time to sit down in front of the TV everyday to watch the local and national news. With Twitter, I can get all the news I need using my Blackberry Twitter application. It’s all at the palm of my hand or on my laptop. I don’t need to schedule my day around when the news will be on, since that is not always possible being a college student. Twitter has definitely become an easy way to access information about what is going on locally, nationally, and worldwide. By using Twitter to keep up to date on the news, I actually feel more informed than I did without Twitter because I don’t need to go searching to find information – it’s all right there in one spot.
Just for Fun. Celebrities, sports teams, and other entertainment sources are all over Twitter. A few that I Follow are ItsWillyFerrel, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Packers, UW Football, and UW-Madison. UW Football and the Packers give play-by-play updates of football games, Kim Kardashian talks about herself (a lot), ItsWillyFerrel’s Tweets are absolutely hilarious (see picture below), and Lady Gaga gives updates about concerts and albums. There are a variety of ways to stay in touch with “just for fun” things that I otherwise would not have time to look up. Twitter has become a source of entertainment on top of being a social networking site. It’s not just a way to keep up with friends, like Facebook generally is. I’ve actually found myself taking study breaks on Twitter more than I do on Facebook!
Twitter has become an increasingly popular social networking site in recent years and I can only assume that it is because of its convenience. You can catch up on what your favorite celebrities are doing, learn about what’s going on around the world and in your hometown, or just get distracted and find yourself consumed by all of the entertaining and hilarious Twitter accounts that are out there. There are so many ways to use Twitter and each user can customize just who they want to Follow and who can Follow them. It’s a way to stay current on everything, not just to keep up with your friends. I have found Twitter to be extremely helpful and convenient because of its short, straight to the point format. I get the information I want at a time that works best for me. It doesn’t get much easier than that to stay up to date!
For my practicum project I am looking into support groups and the one that I joined was “Loss of a Pet”. I just wanted to share an experience that I had with the support group this past weekend that kind of “erked” me a little. One person who was trying to promote a supposedly up in coming band from Seattle used the group to spam out promotions for the band. This bothered me because this is clearly an inappropriate way to use the site. Then I started wondering am I inappropriately using the site for this project? I thought about it more and more and I really do not think I am. Although this has been a project I have shared personal stories about my old dogs that I do believe have made people laugh and brighten there day when they were feeling down. Therefore, I don’t believe that I am anywhere close to on the same level as those who spam the sites with promotions.
I am presenting my practicum tomorrow, and I am looking forward to sharing my information with you all. You will see the basic constructs of my website that I chose to partake in, and I’ll talk about a few of my experiences. One of my concerns was the fact that I am not using my real identity. I will address this further tomorrow and what I did to work with my concerns.
My question for you all is: If you guys were to partake in a chat room, do you think you would lie about your identity in order to gain trust? Or would you be yourself and hope for the best?
This week while playing around on Tumblr and experimenting a little more, I discovered that you can have more than one tumblr under each account. The first tumblr created under the account name remains as the primary tumblr, and you can not make another tumblr the primary one. However, it allows you to have as many Tumblr pages as you want and I did not have to follow more people from each separate one. As you can see below, Tumblr has a dropbox button of all the tumblr pages I’ve made in one place so I can easily pick and chose which one I want to add to or update.
There in the drop down menu are three very different tumblrs I’ve created to show how this can be done. The first is called Home Sweet Rome (where I went abroad), the second is DIY apple Chai (as I’ve mentioned before in previous posts) and the third is a new one titled Beauty and the Badger. I tried to be creative with the tumblr page names in order to attract more followers to my page… don’t know how clever I actually am but I tried! This new tumblr is one I’ve been working on the past week in order to experiment with creating numerous tumblr pages under one account name. This tumblr is made up of pictures I’ve found and taken of friends in different badger attire, some very cool and others a little weird. With each post I’ve added a picture and short caption which is the purpose of tumblr and microblogging. This type of page is perfect for tumblr’s overall purpose because tumblr is used as a way to upload pictures with very short, brief messages and since there isn’t much to be said about each picture I’ve uploaded, tumblr serves this type of blogging very well. There is also a “create new blog” button for easily creating a new tumblr page in seconds. And because a lot of the people I would want to follow on tumblr I’m already following on my other pages, it’s so nice that my followers, and those that I’m following transfer over.
Because I’ve already created a tumblr page, making a new one was so easy and it took only a few minutes to customize the appearance of my page when the first one had taken me much longer due to the fact I was fairly new to tumblr. To the left are the settings of my page where I can update the page’s appearance, tagline, title, and color. If I want to change something on the page that is not already offered to me, I can click “edit HTML” and much like the creation of a website, I can edit the codes to change the page’s appearance as I please. However, in order to do this you need to know a lot about the necessary codes needed to create a webpage in the first place, which is why it’s really helpful that tumblr offers a way to change the page faster without needed any previous knowledge of web page design.
Here is the link to my new tumblr page if you want to check it out!!
